Stayed at Danywenault YHA. Route headed south (Taff Trail)and then up on to the moorland surrounding Mynydd Llangynidr to heading for Chartist Cave/Ogof Fawr. Continued past cave picked up the path heading N and headed towards edge of access land by Tyle. Continued through farmland down to the canal and followed this to Talybon-on-Usk where we had dinner in the pub before heading back to the YHA.
NB: This was an alternative lower-level route chosen because the peaks over 600m were covered in snow. We had planned a route via Twyn-Du up to Fan-Y-Big and then returning via Craig y Fan Ddu and through the forests by Talybont reservoir but this was abandoned due to the snow and ice on the summits over 600m. We had attempted this the previous day and found the summits too icy - we hadn't got the right gear (crampons etc) so turned back.

Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park
Bannau Brycheiniog (the Brecon Beacons) is a mountain range in South Wales. In a narrow sense, the name refers to the range of Old Red Sandstone peaks popular with walkers which lie to the south of Brecon. Sometimes referred to as "the central Beacons" they include South Wales' highest mountain, Pen y Fan. The range forms the central section of the Brecon Beacons National Park (Parc Cenedlaethol Bannau Brycheiniog), a designation which also encompasses ranges both to the east and the west of "the central Beacons". This much wider area is also commonly referred to as "the Brecon Beacons".
