Description

Me and a friend parked the car at car park near Birchen Clough Bridge on the A57 and headed south through the woods and then west along the Ashop Clough/Snake Path. We joined the Pennine Way at Ashop head and followed this to Bleaklow Head. The weather at the point was pretty bad, the rain and low cloud made the visibility very poor. We headed East along the footpath using primarily map and compass and the occasional stake to guide us. We reached Bleaklow stones with few issues - view was not great though! Took bearing and headed SW over Westend Head towards 'Grains in the Water' from here we climbed up to the 540m ring contour at SK105944 and headed down to Upper North Grain and back to the A57 and the car. A good day in terms of navigation practice but the weather was bad. Was glad to get back to the car!

Area : Dark Peak

Is situated between Sheffield and Manchester. The underlying rock is Millstone grit which is often exposed at the edge of the higher peat bogs for which the area is famous.
