This was a glorious winters day and I set off from the Patterdale Hotel car park which was £4.50 for the day. There were some icy patches on the footpaths and in places some knee high snowdrifts, with a sprinkling of snow on the summits, however crampons were not required. I walked down to the school from the car park and headed East over to Side Farm then up the well trodden path (the highest of the two) to Boredale Hause. It was then a case of following the wide track onto Place Fell summit via Redgate Head and Round How (NY408166). There were a couple of large, deep snowdrifts to negotiate on the final push to the summit but it was easily done and soon I was at the summit cairn admiring the views. The visibility was excellent but care was needed on the rocks by the cairn as there was a fair bit of ice. I was a bit pushed for time this day so I headed down the same way I had come.
