Description

Not the greatest day on the hills!! The intention had been to start from Wasdale Head Inn and head into Mosedale before ascending up to Wind Gap and up to the summit of Pillar. Afterwards the plan was to double back and return via Little Scoat Fell, Red Pike and Yewbarrow. Unfortunately the weather/visibility was poor and the ascent up to Wind Gap took much longer than expected (it's a steep and not very nice scree slope) and considering that the complete lack of visibility I made the decision that a shorter route was needed. Therefore we climbed up to Pillar and then followed the line of ridge along to Looking Stead and returned back to Mosedale via Black Sail Pass. Probably not a QMD but still a useful day in the mountains as planning routes in unfamiliar areas needs to be thought of before arriving in a new mountain area ie I would have known that Wind Gap was not the best route up to the ridge. However, the day does provide an example of changing the plan to reflect weather conditions etc.

Area : Southern Fells (Scafell Pike)

The Southern Fells Include Scafell Pike, the highest peak in England, occupy a broad area to the south of Great Langdale, Borrowdale and Wasdale. High and rocky towards the centre of the Lake District, the Southern Fells progressively take on a moorland character toward the south west. In the south east are the well known Furness Fells, their heavily quarried flanks rising above Coniston Water.
