Description

First day of Winter Mountain leader training with Pete Hill MIC.
Fantastic first day, Pete putting me completely at ease. My nerves getting on top of me even though it is training.
We walked into Coire Laogh Mor for Ice axe arrest training and crampon work. Doing lots of navigation work on the way.
Conditions were good, with high cloud base, and a gentle breeze, although very cold.
We spent the day looking at footwork, various crampon types, walking in crampons, cutting steps with an axe, and how to teach this method to potential groups in future.
Ice axe arrest from various positions was done until we were bruised, or I was!
A brilliant informative first day of training.

Area : The Cairngorms

The Cairngorms are ‘a little piece of the arctic in Scotland’ according to the SMC Munros Guide and the area contains many of the tallest peaks in the East Highlands. Ben Macdui (1309m), Cairn Gorm (1244m) and Braeriach (1296) are probably three of the better known and the whole area is full of steep corries and high plateaux. Access to the mountains is typically from Aviemore or Braemar.
