Second day of WML training. We went onto the steep slopes of Coire Cas today learning rope skills and belay types. Again more navigation work along the way. Today was about digging. Lots and lots of digging. We were sheltered from the fierce westerly winds that were beating us up today, with good views and high cloud base. Occasionally lowering but not for long.
Stomper, boot axe and bucket belays were the focus, with slick rope skills being encouraged throughout.
Area :
The Cairngorms
The Cairngorms are ‘a little piece of the arctic in Scotland’ according to the SMC Munros Guide and the area contains many of the tallest peaks in the East Highlands. Ben Macdui (1309m), Cairn Gorm (1244m) and Braeriach (1296) are probably three of the better known and the whole area is full of steep corries and high plateaux. Access to the mountains is typically from Aviemore or Braemar.
