Description

Days 5 and 6 of WML training. Setting up the well named windy ridge (as was to prove very apt the following morning). Blue skies and clear views with barely a breeze heading up the ridge with fully laden packs we carried out lots of navigational legs, taking it in turns to be the leader. Crampons werent needed for ourselves initally, however we concluded should we have a novice group that they would more than likely need to put them on. We passed by the ptarmigan building on Cairngorm to drop over and into Ciste Mhearad. This was our snow hole destination. After discussing locations, safety and a demo how to go about it, the next 4 hours were spent digging our snow holes for the night.
Warm work!!
Night navigation saw us eventually up onto the weather station on Cairngorm, with rapidly deteriorating conditions, high winds and no visibility that were coming in for the night.
We made a decision to leave super early due to the incoming weather pattern, but it was a bit late. After some more instruction on navigating an edge whilst roped up, weheaded down, spending most of it on the ground due to the severe winds. I struggled with this whilst having a huge pack, and did feel a little concerned. Something to work on!

Area : The Cairngorms

The Cairngorms are ‘a little piece of the arctic in Scotland’ according to the SMC Munros Guide and the area contains many of the tallest peaks in the East Highlands. Ben Macdui (1309m), Cairn Gorm (1244m) and Braeriach (1296) are probably three of the better known and the whole area is full of steep corries and high plateaux. Access to the mountains is typically from Aviemore or Braemar.
