Description

Attempted to drive up the Kirkstone pass and slid back down it, so retreated to Coniston and walked the Old Man, Brim Fell and Swirl How in really poor vis and deep snow. The wind had died down but was much colder than the previous day on Bowfell. We used crampons from Old Man to the Prison Band. The Was in completely unfamiliar territory, heading onto a ridge in near total whiteout at times with a novice winter walker. Nav was good heading near to steep ground. Kept on the 1:40 again for the day. Was definitely a good day of thinking about effective use of crampons and suitable terrain. Was a brilliant day out but quite tough. Snow was down to Ambleside village in the AM

Area : Central Fells

South of the A66 and east of the Hardknott Pass as far east as the Kirkstone Pass
