Description

In the second week of lockdown I ventured towards Dougalston & found 2 pairs of Tufted Duck on a lochan. Returning next day to check on them I found them gone but was rewarded by a Little Grebe, fighting with a wriggling morsel so it didn't want to dive to hide from me. Also Greater Spotted Woodpecker at Dougalston, & one heard but not seen in the woods opposite our house. A walk west on the Kelvin beyond Balmuildy Bridge revealed 3 more pairs of Goosander. Teal, Wigeon, Shoveler, Lapwing all still present. Pink Footed & other geese have left. Blackthorn in flower & many trees getting ready to burst. First lambs seen on Thursday above the Linn and a Curlew nearby. Celandine in profusion. Also took a look at the Roman Balmuildy Fort and Wilderness Plantation Fortlet, on the Antonine Wall. Nothing to see on the ground but a slight depression on the line of Antonine Wall (which shows quite well on air photos).
