Description

Stanage Edge (East). From Hathersage to Stanage Edge (East). Planned this walk around the weather forecasts from Mountain Weather Information Service (MWIS) and the Met Office, which both indicated fog and drizzle, low visibility and gusting winds on higher levels (above 300 meters). The path chosen from Hathersage reached the top of Stanage Edge at approximately the middle of the edge, with a turn to the left (East) towards the Triangulation (Trig) Pillar at Cowper Stone (457m); straight ahead out onto the Moor to Stanage Pole; and left (West) to the 'High Neb' Trig Pillar (458m). Depending on the severity of the weather I could bail off the Edge by dropping one or two of the three directions. At the start of the walk in the valley at Hathersage there was moderate wind with continuous drizzle. As I ascended on approach to Stanage Edge the top was obscured in fog. Once on top the wind gusts were ~ 35 mph making it difficult to walk. Visibility was less than 50 meters, with blowing mist and continuous drizzle. I was dressed for the weather, but with the low visibility, continuous rain (wet rocks) and gusting winds, I completed the 'East' leg to the Trig Point, returned to the mid point where I had ascended, and descended back down to Hathersage, to return on my next walk to make the Stanage Poll and Western portion of Stanage Edge when there is good visibility and better weather for a June walk. Definitely learned the value of advance planning for bail points when the weather or terrain calls for it. Total Distance: 9.91 miles/16.23 km; Total Time 4 hours, 38 minutes.

Area : Dark Peak

Is situated between Sheffield and Manchester. The underlying rock is Millstone grit which is often exposed at the edge of the higher peat bogs for which the area is famous.
