
Goyt Valley/Shining Tor (559m): Started from Whaley Bridge Rail Station parking lot. Up to Toddbrook Reservoir (still under extensive repair). Then South on Midshire Way along the Goyt River into Goyt Valley, and Goyt Forest. Traversed the edge of Fernilee Reservoir, then Errwood Reservoir. Turned Southwest at the South end of Errwood and ascended between Shooter's Clough and Stake Side to Shining Tor (559m). Turned North and continued along the ridge line to Cats Tor (519m), then Pym Chair (461m), then Windgather Rocks (408m) to Taxal Edge. Turned East and ascended back down to the Midshire Way at Overton Hall Farm, then North to return to Whaley Bridge. Weather forecast called for light rain early, clearing mid day. It was overcast with light rain all day. The walk along the ridge line from Shining Tor to Cats Tor provided a good opportunity to reassess pacing distance on straight flat trail. Using a GPS, tracked 3 sets of 100m pace tests and came up with 62 paces each time. Also, in the more built up areas near Whaley Bridge was good for practicing micro navigation of small details on the map to the terrain for location (picking the planned trail. Lies to the south of the Dark Peak where the underlying rock is limestone - hence the name. Tends to be a little lower in altitude and also may be known as the Derbyshire or Staffordshire Dales.
