Skiddaw: Summit 2 of a Lake District 3 Peaks with Explorers Connect and Belinda Kirk.
A Lake District 3 Peaks walk with Explorers Connect. An opportunity to meet Belinda Kirk, and other walkers with similar interests.
Not a QML, but an opportunity to see how a well known organization, "Explorers Connect:, organized and managed a large group. There were 20 clients and 4 Explorers Connect staff. Skiddaw was the second walk of the day, after having completed Helvelyn in the morning. There was a wide range of fitness level of the group. The 4 staff were stretched from front to rear of the group. Three less fit individuals ended up lame in knees or ankles. The staff arranged for a taxi to pick them up at the Latrigg Parking Lot for a ride back to Keswick, while the rest walked in (to the pub).
One interesting point was that I have not been one to carry walking poles. They have always seemed more of a hinderance to me personally. However, that third individual was able to complete both the Skiddaw and Scafell Pike (on day 2) walks by barrowing poles from the ML leading the group. I will be carrying them going forward.
Area :
Northern Fells
The Northern Fells occupy a circular area about 10 miles in diameter. The centre is slightly lower, an area of upland grazing and marshland known as Skiddaw Forest. This name may be misleading since the only trees form the windbreak of Skiddaw House. This isolated building, was once a shepherd's bothy. It currently serves as a youth hostel. Skiddaw Forest stands at the head of the three major rivers of the Northern Fells. The Caldew, Dash Beck and the Glenderaterra. These streams divide the circular area into three distinct sections.
