Description

Hill and Moorland Leader (HML) Assessment. Night Navigation on Burbage Moor - Dark Peak. Completely overcast sky in the remoteness of Burbage Moor meant total darkness. The moor was dry underfoot. Navigation was a mix of on trail, but mostly off trail navigating on bearings and pacing to small obscure locations, again, small ponds shown on the map, but dry on the ground, so bearing and pacing had to be exact to find the location (confirmed by the assessors GPS).
All legs were completed successfully, except one of the other two being assessed. One of his legs he just did not take and accurate bearing and, after wandering around for a while, the assessor finally had to step in and assess what went wrong. That was his only real error of the 3 days however.

Departed Sir William at 7:00 PM and returned around midnight.

Area : Dark Peak

Is situated between Sheffield and Manchester. The underlying rock is Millstone grit which is often exposed at the edge of the higher peat bogs for which the area is famous.
