Description

Winter solstice so time is short. Early start from home to park at Bridge of Tilt, then stormed up Glen Tilt at 6km/hr with the rain setting in towards Marble Lodge. Then up the ridge on a better than expected track, into mist at 650m. Left track for a path at 780m & was afterwards glad to have put extra clothes on here. Reaching the plateau at 850m i was getting battered by big wet flakes on a strong wind (but nothing like the 50 - 65mph predicted by MWIS). As always, that last kilometre seemed further & i was happy to touch the cairn & flee, anxiously tracing my prints. Racing down the ridge and back along the valley track, I was back at the car in 5hr 45m compared to a published time of 7 to 9 hr. It was only later that I realized this had taken a lot out of me.
A quick repack to take on overnight gear & I set off in the last light, just before 4pm, to walk to Allt Schiecheachan bothy. The section from the cairn seemed never-ending, following a murky dark path through an unchanging gloom-scape. After what seemed an age, I reached the high point & rapidly to the bothy where some kind soul had left a fire log, smokeless (flameless?) fuel and a can of Budweiser. It was almost 6pm.

Area : Glen Tromie to Glen Tilt (Beinn Dearg)

This area includes the mountains in the Cairngorms National Park which lie between Glen Tromie in the west and Glen Tilt in the south of the park. The northern boundary is the River Feshie and to the south, the A9. There are four Munros in the area, the tallest being Beinn Dearg at 1008m, and the area is typically made up of peaty plateaux with the occasional pointy peak.
