I led a navigation training session for a group of fell runners, focusing on hiking and honing their navigation skills. The session emphasized the DDD technique—Distance, Direction, Duration—as well as interpreting contour lines. The weather was perfect for the activity, with clear skies and no wind, allowing for an uninterrupted learning experience.Throughout the hike, we practiced applying the DDD technique to real-world navigation scenarios, helping the group to better gauge their position and plan their route. The slower pace allowed for thorough instruction and hands-on practice, particularly in reading the map’s contour lines to understand the terrain. The session was successful, with participants gaining confidence in their navigation skills, which will be valuable for both their fell running and broader mountain activities in the future.
