This was a leadership day where I took a group of individuals on a long hike to recce the north section of the Manx Mountain Marathon course. The group was diverse in terms of ability, which presented a challenge in keeping everyone together and moving at a consistent pace. Despite these challenges, I managed to maintain group cohesion, ensuring that everyone was integrating well and supporting each other along the way.
Throughout the hike, I took the opportunity to pass on some valuable knowledge about moorland navigation and uphill hiking techniques. I focused on improving the group's navigation skills, particularly in the more complex terrain we encountered. The hike covered several peaks, including North Barrule (565 m), Snaefell (621 m), and Greeba Mountain (422 m), offering a mix of technical terrain and varying conditions.
The clear, sunny weather that presented its self later on provided excellent visibility, allowing for uninterrupted views across the Isle of Man's stunning landscapes. This also made it easier to teach navigation, as the landmarks were clearly visible, helping the group to better understand map-to-ground interpretation.
Overall, the day was a success in terms of both leadership and skill development. The group finished the hike with improved navigation abilities and a better understanding of the route. It was a rewarding day, both in terms of personal achievement and in seeing the progress made by the group members. This Quality Mountain Day was not just about the physical challenge, but also about mentorship and the joy of sharing knowledge in a stunning outdoor environment.
The total activity duration was around 6 hours, though the moving time recorded was just under 5 hours. This time discrepancy reflects breaks for instruction, group management, and navigation practice. Throughout the hike, I provided valuable insights on moorland navigation and uphill hiking techniques, helping to improve the group’s overall skills.
