Scottish Rock and Water
6 participants
based in the cairngorms.
Day 1 - due to better weather on day on, we looked at skills and tried to journey and practise crampon skills and approipriate ice axe usage as much as possible whilst journeying around the northern cairngorms loop.
Day 2 - we spent time looking at navigation and maps in the cafe whilst the worst of the weather came through, we then went into the ciste to try get away from strong southerly winds, however the winds were very strong and didnt really allow the group to practise much navigation skills but it was an excellent experience for them to feel the changes in winter and be very prepared for what winter can throw at people.
We did a bit of ice axe arrests on the steeper ground and then called the day by 2pm after the group had had enough of the wild weather.
Area :
The Cairngorms
The Cairngorms are ‘a little piece of the arctic in Scotland’ according to the SMC Munros Guide and the area contains many of the tallest peaks in the East Highlands. Ben Macdui (1309m), Cairn Gorm (1244m) and Braeriach (1296) are probably three of the better known and the whole area is full of steep corries and high plateaux. Access to the mountains is typically from Aviemore or Braemar.
