Great Shunner Fell (716m)

Leg 4 - Hawes to Blackton reservoir

After leaving Hawes, I felt refreshed and ready for the next climb up Great Shunner Fell (716m), which was snow-covered and had stunning views as the sun set. I pushed hard and maintaining a strong pace. The descent was technical, but I felt good and moved efficiently.Climbing towards Tan Hill, I encountered a friend unexpectedly, which gave me a morale boost. At Tan Hill, I refuelled, warmed up, and prepared for the next section. The next part was notorious for bogs, but with the ground frozen, I made good progress despite some navigational errors. I encountered thick heather and gorse, slowing me down, and had to find a safe crossing point to avoid busy roads. As I got colder and fatigued, I bivvied down next to a wall near the Burkehat visitor center, I carefully set up my sleeping system and got in. I struggled with freezing conditions, condensation in my bivvy, and frozen gear, but managed to warm up, eat, and prepare to move again. Despite challenges, I stayed focused on navigation and safety in extreme conditions, eventually packing up and continuing.
