Description

3 Day Winter Skills Course
Running it for - Highland Climbing Company
Day 1: 2 clients
Both clients had done some winter walking before and were both good skiers, we we did a Northern Cairngorms loop around Lochan, Sneachda an Cairngorm to start looking at efficient movement in the snow and well as looking after yourself and others in winter terrain.
Day 2: 1 client
Continuing from the day before, we looked at emergency shelters and navigation, a thaw was forecast for the afternoon. Once the snow started to melt we then descended off the hill to look at planning and looking at forecasts.
Day 3: With the thaw stripping alot of the snow, we enjoyed going along ficiale ridge in very friendly snow conditions, but very wet snow. This was really good for my 1 client to have 1:1 on steeper terrain, To then wrap up the 3 days.

Area : The Cairngorms

The Cairngorms are ‘a little piece of the arctic in Scotland’ according to the SMC Munros Guide and the area contains many of the tallest peaks in the East Highlands. Ben Macdui (1309m), Cairn Gorm (1244m) and Braeriach (1296) are probably three of the better known and the whole area is full of steep corries and high plateaux. Access to the mountains is typically from Aviemore or Braemar.
