This is an opportunity to develop a greater understanding of contours and contour interpretation. We will look at and discuss a range of ways of understanding contours and how to use this information to your advantage when navigating. This day is ideal for those who working towards their Hill & Moorland or Summer Mountain Leader Awards. Contour only maps will be used during the day.
During the course of the day, we will look at the following areas:

• Depicting relief on maps
• Identifying the basic contour shapes on the map and ground
• Relating the map and the land to each other using contours
• Identifying features
• Identifying slope angles and aspects
• Navigating using the map alone
• Appropriate use of compass
• Discussing methods of relocation
• Route strategy using contours

Meet at Meelmore Lodge on the Trassey Road 9.00 a.m.  We plan to be finished and back in Meelmore Lodge for 4.30 p.m.

You will need to bring:

• Hillwalking kit for the day (remember its early February!)
• Packed Lunch
• 1:25,000 map of the Mournes
