Saturday - Technical Expert
Attendees must be full AMI Members and full attendance is worth 1.0 CPD point.
Throughout the day we are aiming to cover various aspects of the role of Technical Expert within the context of the Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor Scheme. Such as:
Who and what is a Technical Expert and what do they do?
The role and the legislation; the remit and the limitations; what competencies might be required? What are the legal requirements for TEs? Hazards and Pitfalls.
REMIT/WORK AREAS
Legislation - WAH and WAH amended regulations; Management of H & S at work regs; H & S at work acts; LOLER, PUWER, PPE, AALS (and whatever comes next...)
What are the legal and insurance ramifications of doing anything that ‘signs off’ or where you write out a statement of competence?
Statements of competence - what are they? who writes them? for how long?
Internal TE vs External TE
What can an MCI do simply because they are an MCI and what do they need to do to become a "Technical Expert”?
Where is the line drawn between providing advice as an MCI holder and being deemed to be a TE? Can any MCI sign a statement of competence?
What aspects of work can be done by a “mere MCI” rather than a named TE?
Reinforcing the need to keep within current expertise and competent experience.
Mentoring and working with other members.
The role of the business owner/provider.
Being let go by the provider because they want to do it themselves without your input.
Audit trails, writing reports etc and record-keeping, payment methods, risk and reward principles, not undercharging
Case studies for discussion work.
