About

Assessing, make it a positive experience

A day focussing on looking at what we can do as assessors to set appropriate tasks to observe behaviours required by a syllabus, whilst making the whole process a positive experience for the candidates.

How we can create the best environment for those candidates to do their best?

We will also explore methods for providing feedback and how we can help candidates through both training and assessment to be ready to receive feedback.
Task setting tasks, use of questioning, feedback - what when and how.

The day will be a mix of theory and practical sessions. Please bring along a note book and pen, plus clothing to be outside for some practical sessions in the afternoon.

Should this day prove popular we would be looking at running future days for trainers and assessors in 2024, with similarly experienced trainers and assessors delivering the days.

For 14th December 2023 the workshop will be run by Sam Leary and Kath James.

Kath has experience delivering and directing across the full range of Mountain Training qualifications; walking, climbing and mountaineering in summer and winter. She has worked for individual providers and national centres delivering training and assessment courses over the last 20 years. “I really enjoy the challenge of assessing. Helping to create an environment that allows candidates to shine and be at their best. Setting tasks, asking questions and structuring feedback that is constructive and useful to help them develop further in their chosen area is an area of work that I find really rewarding”.

Sam started working in the outdoors in 1988, she is a Mountain Training course provider as well as a director for multiple other course providers in summer and winter.
‘Assessing is a great responsibility, I strive to do this in a positive and progressive manner. This allows candidates to show case their skill set and also provides a great opportunity to help them develop further.
I feel strongly that being invested in this process as the assessor is key. We need to be thorough and honest with candidates throughout assessments, while at the same time appreciating their efforts, stress and strains. Doing this while maintaining our integrity and the integrity of the qualifications is challenging but so very rewarding for us as outdoor professionals.’
