About

WORKSHOP CONTENT & LEARNING OUTCOMES

We explore two upland habitats:  the beautiful ancient oakwood of Black-a-Tor Copse and the grassed hillsides above it.  The woodland is a fine example of temperate rainforest, biodiverse and home to rare lichens, mosses and birds; it contrasts markedly with the species-poor grassland, impacted by centuries of grazing.  We will consider how these habitats came into existence, the conditions that favour them, and their special characteristics.  We will try our hand at identifying some of the species found here, using activities you might like to try out with your own clients.

The session is for everyone who wants to pass on a love of nature to their clients.

Learning outcomes:

·       Know the characteristics of temperate rainforest and acid grassland

·       Know the characteristics of mosses, lichens, ferns, grasses, sedges, rushes etc, their contribution to the ecosystems they are found in, and have something interesting to tell clients about them

·       Be able to identify at least two lichens, two mosses, one fern, one rush, one sedge

·       Know how to use a hand lens and where to source them cheaply

·       Be aware of a range of ways to learn more about species and habitats

·       Increased confidence to engage clients in appreciating nature
